Junior Electrical Engineer

Position Type: Permanent
Location: Head Office - Ottawa
Qualifications: 0-5 Years, Electrical Engineering degree or equivalent industry experience

Salary: TBD based on qualifications and experience

The candidate will design and develop/build software, firmware, and hardware in support of Plane Sciences’ Flight Recorder Memory Access Retrieval System (MARS) product which you can read about on our website here.  MARS is designed to retrieve flight data and voice from Flight Data Recorders and Cockpit Voice Recorders (best known as black boxes), respectively, by directly reading the Flash EEPROM solid-state memory boards that are recovered from damaged flight recorders involved in aircraft accidents.

The firmware for MARS is currently hosted on the Texas Instruments Tiva C Series Connected Launchpad Evaluation Board, which handles all input/output with the flight recorder memory board.

Software programs are written in Java, C++ or C#, to convert the flight data into the ARINC 717 format as well as decompress the audio into the PCM WAV format.   The MARS user-level software application that interfaces with the hardware, is programmed in Java.

Previous experience with Flash EEPROM memory and/or data compression/codec software is desirable.  Previous experience with building and/or interfacing to microprocessor hardware is required.  Experience with developing low-level software using the Java, C++, and/or C#, is required.

We are also looking for the individual to have broad aspirations to eventually be able to support the entire life cycle of the MARS product including developing marketing material, responding to RFP’s, providing customer training/support and customer management specific to MARS.

When replying, please indicate your qualifications and experience with the following:

  • How many years of building and/or interfacing to microprocessor hardware experience do you have?

  • How many years of developing low-level software using the Java, C++, and/or C# experience do you have?

  • How many years of Flash EEPROM memory and/or data compression/codec software experience do you have?

The candidate will be required to work full time (Monday to Friday) at our facilities at 205 Catherine St., Suite 400, in Ottawa and may be required to travel internationally from time to time to install MARS and train on it.

This is an entry level position, requiring 0 to 5 years of industry experience.

The position is a permanent position, but the candidate must first pass the three-month probation period.

Please email your cover letter, resume, college/university transcript to info@planesciences.com.

As part of your response, and in in order to be considered for a follow up interview, please provide short, concise written responses to the following questions:

  1. Describe what work or courses you have taken that are applicable to the MARS project?

  2. Describe why MARS is valuable to accident investigation authorities?

  3. Do you think MARS has any use for an airline to purchase or is it only useful to government authorities?
